IRAN. Tehran’s vendors battle the streets to survive. The Guardian (15 September 2014). Constantly threatened by changing city ordinances and rogue security officials out to extort protection pay, the work is far from being physically or financially secure.

PHILIPPINES. Estrada’s tents for Quiapo vendors irk ‘legit’ traders. The Philippine Daily Inquirer (14 September 2014) by Nathaniel R. Melican and Djan Arell G. Magbanua. Leaders of four barangays in Quiapo are asking the Manila City government to stop setting up tents that are intended to organize street vendors, citing complaints from longtime business owners in the area.

HONG KONG. Architects step in to street vendors row. Bangkok Post (15 September 2014). Combining the efforts of architects, the private sector, and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the project seeks a way to improve footpaths, making them accessible for pedestrians, vendors and wheelchair users alike.

GHANA. The Feasibility Of The Ban On Street Food. Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (12 September 2014) by Zephaniah Kwesi Danaa. Any attempt to ban street food vendors all in the name of stopping cholera, without intensive education campaigns will be a needless war.

USA. Vendy Awards to spotlight and honor city’s best street vendors. AM New York (11 September 2014) by Ivan Pereira. This year’s Vendy Awards mark the 10th anniversary of the popular cook-off, which is expected to draw 2,500 foodies to Governors Island.

INDONESIA. Vendors adjust to new site at mall. The Jakarta Post (11 September 2014) by Josh Kelety. Tucked away beneath the main entrance to the Emporium Mall near the Pluit reservoir in North Jakarta, vendors who formerly occupied the streets in front of the commercial center are easing into their new accommodation, with relatively few complaints.

ZIMBABWE. A day in the life of a female vendor. The Zimbabwean (10 September 2014) by Sofia Mapuranga. Persistent water shortages and constant power outages worsen her plight, as she has to ensure that her family’s water needs are met before she can embark on her long day.

INDIA. 269 street vendors to get identity cards soon. The Times of India (9 September 2014). For, 269 street vendors, a number collated by Udupi city municipal council (CMC), would soon get their photo identity cards to protect themselves from being harassed by authorities.

INDONESIA. Editorial: Legalizing street vendors. The Jakarta Post (6 September 2014). Another important job for the administration before it legalizes street vendors will be to determine the appropriate number of street vendors and to map out the locations that can accommodate them.

INDIA. ‘Harassed’ vendors want to meet PM. Deccan Herald (8 September 2014). The umbrella organisation for street vendors, NASVI, has sought an appointment with the Prime Minister to bring the alleged high-handedness of Delhi Police to his attention and put an end to it.

USA. The Untold Story of Women Vendors in New York. New America Media (8 September 2014). “It’s rough for a women to sell tamales, unfortunately they are sold really cheap,” says Heleodora Vivar, who started selling tamales to immigrant workers in The Bronx in 1987.

MYANMAR. Street vendors to clean up their act. Myanmar Times (1 September 2014) by Ei Ei Thu and Myint Kay Thi. “We want to upgrade public health and ensure that Myanmar foods available in stalls are up to standard for tourists,” he said.

USA. More Angelenos are becoming street vendors amid weak economy. LA Times (6 September 2014) by Tiffany Hsu. Once the domain of recent immigrants trying to scratch out a living, the ranks of sidewalk merchants have swelled since the economy soured in 2007.  

INDIA. Dabbawalas not under ambit of Street Vendors’ Act. DNA India (2 September 2014) by Eknath Makne. This means that the more than 5,000 dabbawalas that serve around 2.5 lakh customers in the city, cannot be classified as vendors as per the new policy.

COLOMBIA. Realizan pruebas de salud a vendedores ambulantes del Parque del Ingenio. Diario El Pais (15 de Septiembre de 2014). “Lo que queremos es que la gente que viene al parque y le compra a los vendedores ambulantes tenga la tranquilidad de que los alimentos que consumen no se están contaminando por mala manipulación o porque los vendedores estén enfermos”, anotó Arana.

MEXICO. Ambulantes ‘palomean’ programa federal. Sipse (14 de Septiembre 2014). Los vendedores ambulantes del grupo “La Concordia”, encabezados por Jaime Manrique Manzanero, consideran positivo el programa “Crezcamos juntos”, anunciado por el Gobierno Federal.

COLOMBIA. Vendedores ambulantes cerraron la calle Quince. El Nuevo Dia (14 de Septiembre de 2014). Con el cierre de la calle 15 los vendedores ambulantes se manifestaron por la llegada del Esmad que les hizo retirar sus productos.

ARGENTINA. Decomiso y discusión con vendedores ambulantes en el centro. Rio Negro (11 de Septiembre de 2014). Inspectores municipales retuvieron la mercadería de dos manteros ubicados en Moreno y Quaglia.

ARGENTINA. Vendedores ambulantes reclaman empadronamiento. El Litoral (10 de Septiembre 2014). Un grupo de vendedores ambulantes se movilizó ayer hasta el Municipio capitalino para reclamar una reunión con el intendente, quien prometió recibirlos hoy a las 10 en el Palacio Municipal para avanzar con un pedido de reempadronamiento..

COLOMBIA. Avanza formalización de comerciantes en calle. La Tarde (6 de Septiembre de 2014). Una vendedoras de jugos atiende a un cliente, observando las normas de manipulación de alimentos exigidas por las autoridades.

ESPAÑA. Dos detenidos tras enfrentarse cien vendedores ambulantes a la Policía Local en s´Arenal. Diario de Mallorca (5 de Septiembre de 2014). Uno de los agresores lanzó a los agentes una lata de cerveza y otro les intentó golpear con la hebilla de un cinturón – Los atacantes trataban de sacar de un furgón a un africano al que requisaron la mercancía.

MEXICO. Vendedores ambulantes se afilian al Seguro Popular. Uniradio Informa (5 de Septiembre de 2014). En esta ocasion fueron los vendedores ambulantes de la garita internacional de San Ysidro los que se afiliaron al Seguro Popular, para atenderse en cualquiera de las mas de 200 intervenciones que ofrece el programa.

MEXICO. Signan para dotar créditos a ambulantes. La Yucatan Verdad (4 de Septiembre de 2014). La Concanaco firmó convenio con Nafinsa y cinco ayuntamientos, entre ellos el de Mérida,  para ofrecer créditos a los vendedores ambulantes y que pasen de la informalidad a la formalidad.

BRASIL. Ambulantes denunciam supostas agressões da Ordem Pública. G1 (12 de Setembro de 2014). Os vendedores ambulantes que ficam na região central de Petrolina, no Sertão pernambucano, reclamam de supostas agressões por parte dos agente da Secretaria de Ordem Pública da cidade.

BRASIL. Audiência pública discutirá queixas de ambulantes. Diario de Pernambuco (12 de Setembro de 2014). Uma audiência marcada para 3 de outubro, na sede do Ministério Público Estadual, vai discutir queixas de vendedores ambulantes sobre abordagens de fiscais da Prefeitura do Recife.

BRASIL. Movimentos sociais denunciarão situação dos camelôs a órgãos internacionais. Diario de Pernambuco (10 Setembro 2014). Após uma missão no centro do Rio de Janeiro para ouvir denúncias de camelôs, integrantes da Plataforma Brasileira de Direitos Humanos, Econômicos, Sociais, Culturais e Ambientais (Dhesca) e do Comitê Popular da Copa Rio vão fazer um relatório para ser apresentado ao Ministério do Trabalho, à Organização Mundial do Trabalho e a outras entidades internacionais de direitos humanos.

BRASIL. Mais 120 camelôs serão retirados das ruas do Centro de Manaus. A Critica (9 de Setembro de 2014). Os autônomos receberão auxílio de R$ 1 mil mais cesta básica enquanto aguardam pelo novo local de trabalho. Segundo o Município, já são quase mil camelôs fora das vias da região central da capital.

BRASIL. Boxes para camelôs começam a ser instalados na Galeria dos Remédios, em Manaus. A Critica (1 de Setembro de 2014). Segundo o secretário da Seminf, Luiz Borges, 300 operários estarão trabalhando diuturnamente para que a galeria fique pronta no tempo mais curto possível.

Des petits métiers, de l’informel, au secteur formel, touts les domaines d’activités sont bons pour ces dernières, l’essentielle étant de gagner leur vie à la sueur de leur front, mais dans la dignité et subvenir aux besoins de leurs familles. Parmi ces bonnes dames, des vendeuses et revendeuses de friperie, de tissus qui refusent de baisser les bras. Nous sommes allés à leur rencontre aux marchés Dubaï (Colobane) et HLM de Dakar.

EGYPTE. Marchands ambulants: La colère monte. Hebdo Ahram (10 Septembre 2014) par Héba Nasreddine. Trois semaines après l’évacuation des marchands ambulants du centre-ville, aucune solution n’a été mise en place. Là où ils sont, ils n’ont pas de clients et leur situation financière s’est fortement dégradée.
