UK & CAMBODIA. Help Cambodia’s garment workers, unions urge Business Secretary. The Independent (3 August 2014). The Business Secretary, Vince Cable, must force British clothing companies to investigate whether garments sourced from Cambodia are made at factories with fair labour practices, the unions have warned.

BANGLADESH. Tuba Group workers begin fast-unto-death. Prothom Alo (29 July 2014). Workers of five apparel factories of Tuba Group began fast-unto-death at Badda in Dhaka from Monday evening demanding arrears.

BANGLADESH. One Year On: Bangladesh Worker Safety Alliance Charts Progress. Triple Pundit. (25 July 2014) by Bill DiBenedetto. From that singular event, the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety was created to drive improvements, but a year later and despite some real progress, there is still much more to do.

INDIA. Garment workers protest in Chennai, but minimum wages are low across India. Scroll In (24 July 2014) by Aarefa Johari. It has been nearly five months since the Tamil Nadu government announced an increase in minimum wages for labourers across different industries, but the state’s garment and tailoring workers have had little cause for cheer.

CAMBODIA. Garment Workers Demand District Intervention. The Cambodia Daily (24 July 2014) by Sek Odom. About 200 garment workers on Wednesday marched from the Sun Well Shoe Factory on Veng Sreng Street to the Pur Senchey district office, demanding intervention in an ongoing dispute over their wages, a union representative said.

CAMBODIA. After deal, unions expect support. Phnom Penh Post (24 July 2014) by Sean Teehan, Mom Kunthear and Khouth Sophak Chakrya. News of an end to a year-long political deadlock has labour union leaders believing the opposition party can bring their interests to parliament, but a lack of follow-through could cost the Cambodia National Rescue Party vital support from one of its key interest groups.

ARGENTINA. En Argentina hay 100.000 talleres textiles de bolivianos. La Razón (26 de Julio de 2014) por Iván Condori. “Cada taller cuenta con 25 trabajadores y una fábrica requiere de 50 funcionarios promedio, esto muestra la importancia de la presencia boliviana en este rubro”.

La maquila, obra escrita por Valeria Medina y dirigida por Paula Etchebehere, nos transporta a un espacio en el que se yuxtaponen el trabajo semiesclavo de una fábrica textil latinoamericana produciendo para una multinacional y el glamour de una pasarela de alta costura donde las modelos lucen indolentemente esos vestidos cosidos entre lágrimas.

MEXICO. México: Violenta maquiladora derechos de trabajadoras. Argen Press (22 de Julio de 2014) via CIMAC. Trabajadoras de la maquiladora Johnson Controls, en Reynosa, Tamaulipas, denunciaron la violación a sus derechos laborales, luego de que la empresa vendió sus activos sin previo aviso y sin que la nueva compañía, Visteon, les reconozca su antigüedad de hasta 16 años.

BRASIL. STIVestuário prepara torneios de truco e canastra para agosto. JDV (22 de Julho de 2014). O Sindicato dos Trabalhadores do Vestuário mantém abertas até o dia 30 de julho as inscrições para o 8º Torneio de Truco e o 6º Torneio de Canastra que acontecem dia 2 de agosto, a partir das 14 horas, na sua sede. A participação nos torneios é gratuita e destinada exclusivamente para os trabalhadores e trabalhadoras vestuaristas, sindicalizados ou não.

BRASIL. Candidata Simone Dutra faz panfletagem em porta de fábrica em São Gonçalo do Amarante. Tribuna do Norte (21 de Julho de 2014). Acompanhada de militantes do partido, Simone conversou com os trabalhadores e trabalhadoras da fábrica sobre as condições de trabalho, os problemas sociais do estado e as mudanças propostas pelo partido.

BANGLADESH. Bangladesh: Les ouvriers du textile réclament le paiement de leurs arriérés de salaire. RTL (3 Août 2014). Plus d’un an après l’effondrement du Rana Plaza, un immeuble qui accueillait des ateliers de confection pour diverses grandes marques de vêtements internationales, à Dhaka, la situation des ouvriers du textile au Bangladesh est toujours très précaire.

ALGÉRIE. Labraâ Nath Irathen 12e journée de la grève illimitée de la ”Chemiserie du centre’‘. La Depeche de Kabylie (2 Août 2014). Un conflit socioprofessionnel agite l’usine de confection « Chemiserie du centre », de Larbaâ Nath Irathen, qui emploie 190 salariés, de manière récurrente, et dont le personnel observe une grève illimitée depuis le 21 juillet dernier avec une plateforme de revendications en 13 points,  sans qu’aucune solution ne vienne mettre fin  à cette brouille entre le collectif et sa direction.

BANGLADESH. Un programme d’amélioration pour les ouvriers bangladais du cuir. Fashion Mag (21 Juillet 2014). Pour améliorer les conditions de travail dans les tanneries bangladaises, l’Organisation internationale du travail (OIT) et le gouvernement norvégien mettent en place un programme. Celui-ci devra permettre d’informer les travailleurs sur leurs droits, face au danger mortel posé par certaines manipulations.
